Another Favorite Delusion: Tomorrow, I’ll Be a Potato Farmer

I love a good delusion!

Oh my word, y’all.

I abound with delusions. All sorts of them. Someday, I’ll be crafty, efficient, excited to exercise, and who knows what else.

When these potatoes started sprouting, it seemed like a great idea to hold onto them and start potato farming. I mean, I saw an instructional video years ago that sounded like it was super easy and all you needed was a trash can and some dirt. (At least that’s what I remember.)

My 10 year old (she was only 9 at the time) daughter was all for it. We researched, we dreamed, and we considered.

But we didn’t actually do anything.

Making a potato farm out of old tires sounded fun. We kept dreaming and planning.

And then, the very next week on the way to the lake, we had TWO flat tires on our boat trailer!!! What luck!

Yay for us, the members of Future Potato Farmers of America, not so much for Daddy who had to change both flats and then buy and install new tires.

With the (totally rotten) spare, we had three tires to build our potato-growing contraption. But we couldn’t do it right then, because there was no room in the Suburban to actually haul them back home.

And then I never thought about our Potato Passion again.

Until my Slob Vision cleared on a day spent deep cleaning and I saw that the cute little sprouties of a few months ago had turned into alienish growths of terror.

And I gave up.

Goodbye, endless free potatoes.

Goodbye, dreams.

Goodbye, delusion.

I’m happy to do my part to support Real Potato Farmers. Besides, I learned we don’t eat as many potatoes as I thought we did. The bag of potatoes on the shelf below was scarily sprouted as well.

They all went in the trash.

Decluttering Duhs: The Stink Test

When to Declutter These Shoes Ask the Nose!

I loved these shoes. Loved them. Hubby gave them to me for Christmas a year and a half ago.

Somehow, he knew exactly what I wanted. (Maybe because I ordered them myself.)

I bought them before we spent Christmas at Disney World because I knew there might be capri days. Y’know. Days when it was too cool for shorts but too warm for long pants.

(I am so scared that capris might be going out of style. This girl who doesn’t look her best in shorts likes to feel a breeze on her ankles!)

I’m definitely not a fashionista, but I have an aversion to wearing socks and big chunky tennis shoes with capris. But I’m also 42 and shoes (especially shoes worn on days of guaranteed foot pain) must be sensible.

These were sensible and a little bit cute and were meant to be sockless.

Yay.

But sockless also means stink-guardless.

Oh my word.

For real.

I knew they weren’t at their freshest anymore, but about a month ago I ended up identifying a public smell as me and decided they needed to go.

And yet, I didn’t pitch them the minute I got home.

So, as happens, I was in a hurry one day. I needed capri-appropriate shoes. My toenails were in horrible shape so sandals weren’t an option.

I wore them, hoping I could get away with it just one more time. That the schtank wouldn’t get through this time.

I was wrong. And I was in a meeting. A situation where I couldn’t stand downwind or walk away.

So that was it. I kept them one wear (or, honestly, probably six wears) too long. I resolved to come home and throw them away immediately. (Stinky shoes shouldn’t be donated.)

And I almost did. I just couldn’t find my camera. But now they’re gone. Because remembering to pitch them and having an available camera finally coincided, even if I wasn’t wearing capris at the time.

And now for the Amazon affiliate links. Seriously, they’re great and super comfy shoes. Find them (not the same colors, but the same style) here on Amazon. And if you can remember to wear these doolollies, you’ll stay stink-free a lot longer.

Not Sure Why That Wasn’t An Automatic No

Why Would I Keep Duct Tape that has been through the Washer

Last Saturday, I spent the day deep cleaning.

Deep cleaning always results in some interesting finds. Who knows what will surface when I move something that’s been conveniently hiding a random piece of who-knows-what in a corner.

I ran across some doozies.

Like duct tape that had obviously been sent through the washing machine.

Let’s all tilt our heads to the left and think about how uncomfortable it would be to walk around with duct tape in your pocket. Or how much of a hurry someone would need to be in to not notice a big ol’ roll of duct tape in his/her pocket as he/she got ready to take a shower.

Or how the people sorting and then doing laundry didn’t notice it either.

But most dumbfounding of all is why I took the duct tape out of the washing machine and stuck it in the junk drawer at least 10 feet away in the kitchen.

Because that required actual noticing.

I guess duct tape’s legendary usefulness made me do it.

But as I ran across it while in Clean It Out Mode, I saw it for what it was: a kindof nasty-looking roll-but-not-really of duct tape that probably wouldn’t stick very well even if I could pull and yank hard enough to get some off.

So I threw it away.

Why did I keep a doorknob?!?!

Next, I ran across a doorknob. A doorknob.

Who keeps a doorknob?

Me. I totally do.

I have an antique doorknob that fell off the door of my historical-sounds-too-fancy-run-down-probably-describes-it-better college apartment. I love that doorknob and smile whenever I randomly run across it. I doubt I’ll ever pitch it.

But this isn’t an antique doorknob. It’s OUR doorknob that fell off our front door after months of not being able to open that door from the outside.

I don’t love this doorknob. Maybe because this time I am the homeowner and a doorknob falling off isn’t quaint as much as it’s a big pain in the hiney. A pain that requires buying a new $80 doorknob and the knowledge that even though we changed out the doorknob we still have to repaint the door.

So I pitched it.

What random things have you come across lately that make you question YOUR sanity?

Routines Before Kid Training

Step One for Getting Kids to Help

It’s Monday morning. At 9:12, I’m just now getting to work. I already feel behind. Last week threw me some curveballs, so the days I thought would be spent getting ahead on this blogging gig were spent doing crazy things that seem to randomly come up with this book-publishing thing I’ve committed to do.

And then Mother’s Day. We spent it with family, and I was thankful to also get away to a movie with friends at the end of the day.

But all that threw us completely off our routine.

We didn’t sort laundry for today’s Laundry Day last night. Today is Texas’s big, huge, daunting, icky testing day (one of them) so getting going with that in mind meant I never thought to remind the kids to bring and sort their laundry this morning.

After returning from school drop off and remembering what I’d forgotten, I felt that physical feeling of temptation and considered putting off Laundry Day until tomorrow.

But I didn’t.

Tomorrow is another big, huge, daunting, icky testing day.

Tonight is dance class and swim parent meeting and who-knows-what-else.

The chances of remembering and doing and all that are 50/50. Which means the chances of forgetting and not doing and going commando are also 50/50.

Monday is Laundry Day. That works for us. I know, from experience both doing it this way for five years now and having clean clothes every day and from not having a routine at all for years and years and never knowing for certain that I’d have clean clothes on a random given day that we need Laundry Day. And we need it on Monday.

So I did it myself. I dragged hampers and baskets to our little hallway outside the laundry room and sorted it all by myself. And that took me a whole seven minutes, and now Laundry Day is underway just like it would have been if the kids had helped with the sorting, and we can all avoid wearing stinky socks tomorrow.

Yay for not smelling like feet.

And as I sorted, I pontificated. It’s what I do.

One of the questions I’m asked most is how to get family members to help out. Especially kids.

Now, to be clear, there are people who really do have it all together and simply need advice on getting their kids in on the loveliness of having it all together.

But those are not my people. My people are the ones who are overwhelmed. Who don’t have it all together.

That’s who I’m talking to, because I have learned how to not be overwhelmed, but I’ve given up on ever having it all together. (Whatever “it” is.)

How to Train Your Kids to Help With Cleaning Routines?

Step One: Have cleaning routines.

For real, y’all. Randomness doesn’t work. I tried it, and it just doesn’t.

I experimented with every laundry routine known to humankind and finally landed on one that works for our home and our family and my ridiculously-distractible personality.

With each random attempt, I randomly included the kids. When each random attempt failed, the kids breathed sighs of relief.

But once I established a routine, and kept up with that routine, we finally had a visible, trackable, observable, “way we do laundry.” So bringing the kids on a real routine was so much easier than when I was trying to explain something they’d never consistently seen happen.

And now, it’s their routine, too. Laundry Day is our family’s routine.

Any one of them could explain how laundry gets done in our home.

But obviously, I still have to parent. I (or Daddy, who is usually better at remembering than I am) have to remind them that the time has come to get Laundry Day rolling.

On weeks like this one, I’m reminded how thankful I am that the routine itself usually reminds me to remind them. And how now it’s actually helpful to have them help, unlike those years when I would make them help with the day’s random housekeeping and then grow so frustrated it was easier to just give up and do it myself.

Yay for routines.

Curious about Laundry Day? This explains how I got to the point of making it work.

How to Get Kids to Help With Cleaning Be sure you have established routines already.

Real Progress: No Panic at the Thought of Opening the Door!

Real Progress No Panic at the Thought of Opening the Door! from our mailbox at ASlobComesClean.com

I LOVE this success story from one of you!

NonyMailbox-copy-300x269

I just wanted to thank you for all of your inspiration and help through your blog! I have been decluttering since last August/September, and I am working on getting into a better routine of cleaning (now that there’s not so much STUFF in the way!). I still have a ways to go, but I was able to see real progress and relief in the middle of a small disaster last night.

Yesterday, our pipes clogged and flooded the utility/laundry area in the basement. Of course this happened on the day that I FINALLY decided to tackle the disgusting refrigerator, and all the gross, old food that I’d run through the garbage disposal ended up all over the basement floor!! EEEWWW!!!!

As hubby & I were cleaning up the reeking disaster, I had an amazing realization. After dealing with that mess, I didn’t have to stress anymore that night. I knew that hubby would be able to call the plumber in the morning and I would be able to LET HIM IN THE HOUSE at ANY TIME!!!

I didn’t have to stay up all night crying and fuming while enduring a marathon “cleaning” session. I didn’t have to hurry around the house today in a frenzy before the plumber came, hiding things. And, I WASN’T EMBARRASSED when he came in the door!!!! I can’t remember that ever happening before!

All I can think is that I have tried so many times over the years to tackle this beast, but I just never “got it” until I came across your blog.

So, THANK YOU for understanding how I think and process things! THANK YOU for sharing your story, and inspiring me! THANK YOU for walking me through the hardest part and setting me up for success! THANK YOU for giving me the tools that led to me finding relief in the middle of my little disaster!!
